There comes a time on our spiritual path when we must confront our demons and conquer our fears so that our soul may break through to a higher level of consciousness. In ancient times, the shaman would retreat into a cave or underground chamber where he would sit alone in the darkness contemplating death and fighting the demons of his shadow self. During this time he would often experience visions and intense, transformational insights. After three days he would emerge “reborn,” enlightened and centered in his power.
